Marian directs the successful Stroke Rehabilitation research programme within NMAHP RU. Comprised of multidisciplinary researchers, the team specialize in the development, conduct and delivery of high-quality evidence relating to the effectiveness of stroke rehabilitation interventions. Marian's research interests include rehabilitation and fundamental care interventions after stroke. Much of her work has involved the design and evaluation of complex multidisciplinary interventions within randomised controlled trials, mixed methods and meta-analysis designs. Methodologically she has a particular expertise in complex systematic reviews and meta-analyses including Individual Participant Data and network meta-analyses and she was recently awarded a Cochrane-REWARD prize for her contribution to the reduction of waste in research. She is an Associate Editor of Cochrane Stroke Group's Editorial Board (www.stroke.cochrane.org).
She Chairs the Collaboration of Aphasia Trialists (www.aphasiatrials.org ) a network of >190 multidisciplinary aphasia researchers from across 36 international partner countries which she established in 2013. She also chairs the rehabilitation section of the Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive (VISTA-Rehab) (www.vista.gla.ac.uk) a shared resource of >11,500 patients' stroke rehabilitation trial data and the Aphasia Committee of the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders (www.ialpasoc.info). She is a member of the Stroke Association (UK) Aphasia Advisory Committee and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in 2019. Her research has impacted upon stroke care and rehabilitation internationally. She works closely with stroke survivors, their carers and multidisciplinary stroke care teams and collaborates with academic and clinical partners across the UK and internationally.
